We don't know whether this Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1750, and we understand it is still open.

St Mary's was the first large parish church to be designed by Augustus Pugin in "Victorian Gothic" style. Work began in June 1838, to an overall cost of £7,000, with the dedication taking place the following year, in October 1839. A Lady chapel to the north west was added in 1854, designed by Pugin's son, Edward.

Typically of Derby churches, it has a high tower (117ft), very visible from the city bypass. A statue of the Blessed Virgin once stood on top of the tower which on occasion would be floodlit, but it was removed in the late 1980s as it was found to be unsafe. There are photos on the Pictures of Derby website showing it prior to its removal.

Historically, according to Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide, St Mary's was the successor to the 'Old Roman Catholic Chapel', founded in 1750, to which its congregation moved in 1843.

Now or formerly Roman Catholic.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Derby, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
