Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1955, and we understand it is still open.

Here is a modest, but nevertheless attractive red brick building, situated next door to Cairns Road Baptist Church. It is rectangular, with a steeply sloping roof, and entrance facing Cairns Road. The entrance door has semi-circular fanlight with diamond glazing, and is outlined in brick, and there are two tall and narrow windows on either side of it, with similar glazing. The sign above the door - black lettering on a white board - reads "Westbury Park Spiritualist Church".
Westbury Park Spiritualist Church website tells us about "Our Pioneers", who began meeting in rooms above the shops in Kellaway Avenue. This may be the building recorded as "Redland National Spiritualist Church, Ground Floor, 4, Kellaway Avenue" in the notice announcing its closure in The London Gazette of 9th September 1955 (p.5124). Its original certification was dated 10th November 1947. Its location can be seen on Old Maps of 1951-1953, as a semi-detached building set back from the road, labelled as "Church". The present building, raised by this group of courageous pioneers, was dedicated that same year, 1955.
The following notice in The London Gazette of 30th October 1956 (p.6142) records its registration for marriages:
A Building certified for worship named WESTBURY PARK SPIRITUALIST CHURCH, Cairns Road, Westbury Park, in the registration district of Bristol, in the county borough of Bristol, was on 23rd October, 1956, registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949. Dated 25th October 1956.
Interested readers may also wish to know that the Church belongs to the Spiritualists National Union, an important "national" distinction.

Search Tips:
