Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1950, but we understand it was closed about 1994.

St Philip's Methodist Church was situated on the south-west corner of the roundabout at the junction of Novers Lane with Inns Court Avenue and Leinster Avenue. It is named as such on Old Maps of 1971, where it is shown as 2 buildings. One is rectangular, and aligned north-south, and the other is L-shaped, and at the south end of the plot. Possibly the former was the Church, and the latter a Church Hall.

Maps of 1949 show a Youth Centre at its location, and in the present day, the site has been the focus of a residential development known as "Soper Gardens".

The Bristol Record Office list it as "Inns Court, Novers Lane, (later St Philip's Methodist Church)", and hold registers of marriages for the period 1950-1994. The following notice in The London Gazette of 7th July 1950 (p.3520) records its initial registration:

A Separate Building, duly certified for religious worship, named METHODIST CHURCH situated at Rovers Lane, Inns Court in Bristol registration district in the county borough of Bristol was on the 29th June 1950, registered for solemnizing marriages therein pursuant to Sec. 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949. Dated 30th June 1950.

Note: 'Rovers' is as-is in the original source. I was unable to find a corresponding notice of cancellation.

Denomination

Now or formerly Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Gloucestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
